“After Scoring a 100…”: Ex-Captain on Why He Selected Virat Kohli for Team India in 2008

Dilip Vengsarkar, a former captain of India, recalled why he chose a young Kohli for the senior India Team at the time.

At the moment, Virat Kohli is a legend in Indian cricket. He is second in terms of tons scored in international cricket (71) and is regarded as one of the all-time greats in Indian cricket. He displayed promise right away.

He made his ODI debut the same year he guided India to victory at the U-19 World Cup. Dilip Vengsarkar, a former captain of India, recalled why he chose a young Kohli for the senior India Team at the time.

“It is the selectors’ vision. He didn’t get a perfect score, but what I liked about him was that he agreed to start the innings when I requested him to.

India had a strong assault and some international fast bowlers as they chased about 270 runs in New Zealand. Additionally, we assembled a strong team of young players.

On WV Raman’s YouTube channel, Vengsarkar said, “They were all Under-23, and we wanted to pick out of those players… who would play for India later.”
